The route from Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake is one of the most adventurous and challenging drives in the Himalayas. The journey typically starts from Diskit, the largest and oldest town in Nubra Valley, and covers approximately 160 kilometers to reach the lake. This route traverses some of the most remote and rugged terrains, making it a thrilling experience for those who dare to take it on.

This is only one place along the route where the traveler can take a little rest with a bowl of Maggie and a hot cup of Coffee.

Interesting is the fact that at an altitude of around 17000 feet there is this marshland and we do see some wildlife here like the wild horses. This place no doubt is pristine. We drove through this place so that we could reach Pangong in time to see the sunset.

The drive begins with a relatively smooth ascent towards the Khalsar village, where the Shyok River accompanies you for a significant part of the journey. However, the real challenge begins as you approach Agham, where the road condition deteriorates. The narrow, rocky paths demand utmost concentration, as any miscalculation can lead to dangerous slips and skids. The Shyok River crossing is particularly notorious, with water levels fluctuating rapidly due to melting glaciers, often leaving drivers to navigate through knee-deep waters.

From Agham, the route splits, with one path leading towards the more treacherous Wari La Pass and the other continuing alongside the Shyok River. While the Wari La route offers a thrilling drive over one of the lesser-known high-altitude passes, it is also prone to landslides and snow blockages, making it impassable at times. The Shyok route, on the other hand, though less extreme, still presents challenges with its narrow stretches and unpredictable road conditions.

One of the primary challenges faced by drivers on this route is the altitude. At over 18,000 feet, oxygen levels are significantly lower, making both the vehicle and its occupants work harder.
